FISHERMEN struggling with rising fuel prices will have their operating costs cut as part of a five-point rescue package.

The move is in response to a request from the Jersey Fishermen’s Association for support as they try to overcome increased fuel prices and a reduction in the market value of their catch. Jersey Enterprise has linked up with Jersey Harbours to reduce operating costs for all members of the JFA.

The other four parts of the package include a marketing campaign which started today to encourage Islanders to buy locally caught shellfish, financial help at gaining the Marine Stewardship Council Accreditation Scheme, an investigation into ways to save fuel and help in developing market opportunities in the UK and European export markets.

JFA spokesman Don Thompson said: ‘We have worked with Jersey Enterprise to create a package of initiatives that will achieve our short- and long-tem objectives. We have suffered from a doubling of fuel costs and a significant drop in the value of our catch. It has got to the point where it’s no longer economical to leave the port.
