Waterfront: What’s needed are common sense, integrity and truth

From Ken Sheehan.
THE numerous political débâcles of the past weeks vary in degrees of incompetence. There is no doubt that the situation in Jersey government is now farcical.

The denials and explanations that have been made by the politicians involved are those shown to be from desperate people.

The honourable stance would be to be honest, admit their mistakes and resign if necessary. Some are even in a state of denial when proof is at hand of their guilt. The States have become for Jersey the equivalent of Big Brother – totally inane and past its sell-by date.

A system has been spawned to run the Island which is now clearly out of control. The accountability is not there, except as a form of tick in the box by Scrutiny committees. It is incestuous and self-policing, with politicians in some instances able to wield dictatorial power. Home Affairs and Planning are two examples.

Politicians are there to make decisions, not for massaging their own egos and those of others. We would all be happy if the percentage of right decisions was nine out of ten, not as it is at the moment.

We need independence and accountability from politicians. A politician’s lot is not an easy one, but it is the choice of the person concerned, with the main purpose being to work for the good of the Island.

The current system of a Chief Minister and cabinet is not working. It is election year and for the majority it is not going to be an easy ride. The people of Jersey have had enough.

Many years ago the people would have taken to the streets and overrun the government of the day. Not surprisingly, the subject is now on the majority of people’s lips.

It is without doubt one of the most disastrous political periods in the history of Jersey, and lessons need to be learned fast.

What is needed are common sense, truth and conviction for what is best for the Island. We need people of strong character with integrity, not easily swayed by the previously mentioned outside influences.
