Derek Taylor: Just happy to be in the swim, bike and run …
Wednesday 2nd July 2008, 2:58PM BST.
A DREAM came true for a veteran Island triathlete last month when Derek Taylor competed in and won his age group race at the 18th staging of the Windsor Triathlon.
Just six years after being told that he would probably never walk again, after suffering serious injuries after being knocked off his racing bike in Bournemouth, Taylor has amazingly fought his way back and recently he competed in a full triathlon again for the first time and he finished top of the pile in the 65-69 year old class.
Taylor said: ‘I was told that I would probably never walk again let alone compete in a full triathlon. It’s been a long way back and, obviously, I’m delighted. I had a dream of completing a full triathlon again one day and now I’ve achieved it I feel I’m on top of the world.’
The quietly spoken 67-year-old completed the Windsor event, which attracted nearly 2,500 competitors in the full range of age groups, in 2 hours 58 minutes and 47 seconds.
