Madeirans celebrate their national day
Wednesday 2nd July 2008, 2:56PM BST.
ISLANDERS flocked to Liberation Square yesterday when Jersey held its first Madeira Day.
The event was held in the square from 12 pm until 5.30 pm and saw people queuing up for Madeiran-style food such as espetadas, grilled sardines and cakes.
Jersey Tourism also brought over a Madeiran folk group, Grupo Folclorico, from the Centro Desportivo Cultural Portuguese in London to perform a selection of traditional tunes.
The group members are all Madeirans who live in London, but gave a day of their time to perform in Liberation Square. Islanders including Gilda Baghiani (50) gathered in the square to watch the activities taking place. The hotel manager, originally from Madeira, has lived in St Helier for two decades and said that she thought the event should be held every year.
