We may be a captive audience, but we’re not daft

From Julia Porter.
IN the JEP last week the proprietors of the Jersey Eye expressed surprise at its lack of popularity among locals.

Apparently in other locations where the Eye has been located, the queues have been, to use a colloquialism, ‘around the block’ on a regular basis.

However, the reason for this seems simple: for the most part the Eye was offering something different for the local populations – views of their local environment which they had never seen before (and would probably never see again without the aid of an aeroplane). So interest was inevitably going to be high.

Here in Jersey it is a different matter. The simple and unavoidable fact is that the Jersey Eye offers very little in the way of something different for the average local.

There is no reason why we should pay what is a pretty hefty sum (for the average family) to go on the Eye to see much the same views of town and sea which are available for nothing (and with a bit of local history thrown in for good measure) from the top of our very own ‘Eye’ – Fort Regent.

There are no spectacular surprises waiting for us worth the price of a ride on what is barely more than a glorified Ferris wheel. We may be a captive audience on this Island, but we’re not daft.
