Children in care are safe, says UK expert
Saturday 5th July 2008, 9:59AM BST.
NO children in care in Jersey are currently at risk, a major inquiry into children’s services has confirmed.
The review by UK expert Alan Williamson has also praised the controversial Greenfields secure unit.
His report, commissioned by the States after allegations from former Health Minister Stuart Syvret that the children’s service was failing, has concluded that it is, in fact, improving, although more work needs to be done to raise standards further.
A call for the appointment of a Minister for Children is made in Mr Williamson’s report, which was welcomed by the three politicians who currently share responsibility for child protection issues, Health Minister Ben Shenton, Home Affairs Minister Wendy Kinnard and Education Minister Mike Vibert.
