Prices up 7% since start of GST

JERSEY’s consumer watch-dog has found that prices have risen by seven per cent since the introduction of GST in May.
The Island’s Consumer Council carried out a price check in the Island’s main supermarkets in April and again in May to compare prices before and after the three per cent Goods and Services Tax was implemented.
Deputy Alan Breckon, the Consumer Council chairman, said that he did not think the rise was down to just GST and inflation.
‘We have not seen the proof of that. We know about world commodities, but this is a significant jump in a short period of time when you look at it,’ he said. ‘GST is three per cent and is coming out as five or six per cent, so what are the issues here? Are people taking advantage of a situation?

Well done! He’s quick isn’t he – of course all the supermarkets and local stores have taken advantage of the 3% raise.. I’m sure us consumers have all noticed it in our food bills…
GST should never have been put on food!

Does anyone have any idea of how the additional cost of being an unpaid tax collector for the States of Jersey has affected the small business?
7%?
10% would not even begin to cover it!
Whoever stands for the forthcoming elections on the ticket of abolishing this rediculous tax will win by a country mile.
Is there anyone out there brave enough to hang their colours to this particular mast?
We need to ask.

My weekly shop increased 8% in the months leading up to GST and subsequently increased again when GST was introduced.
Its time for Tesco

My husband’s wages should get paid directly to the Co-Op and Safeway as that is where they all end up anyway! Too much month left at the end of the money!

exactly why shops should be forced to show the GST on the receipt for each item. They are hiding their own increases behind GST, did you think they would do otherwise!

Just noticing different shops increasing the prices of certain products, and then finding out that Checkers Express apparently has two pricing structures makes this island even worse!

How about some idiot take charge of this matter, removes GST as it stands and make all consumers add GST at the till, at least it will be easier to spot when the public are being ripped off. Sorry let me re-word this. The public are already being ripped off.

Its time to pack up and leave this Circus run Island.

I had a letter published seven months ago, whereby I pointed out that inflation will reach over 7% as a result of the GST, and opportunism. I received two letters criticising my argument. One from the Chief Minister. Look who was right!!!

I agree with Colin…it’s time for Tesco!! We all knew that we would be “ripped off” once GST was added to our weekly shop!! Time for the monopoly to stop and people need to make sure they vote in future for the right people. Otherwise the people will never be heard.

As a full time working mother of two this GST is crippling us. If it were not for Icelands relatively cheap food I would not be able to feed my children every month. The comment about too much month left after the money ends is all too true. Bring on ASDA, LIDLs, TESCO and anyone else who wants to give the CONSUMER a good deal, get rid of all those who are only interested in lining their own pockets !

I left Jersey permanently last year and have not looked back, I live in Scotland now where there are affordable alternatives to everything. I had grown tired of being ripped off in every aspect of life. Jersey has been ruined by the states and the greedy finance industry, my heart sinks everytime I look at this website, I’m glad I did not get trapped into buying property there!

It makes me sick to the stomach to hear of people trying to make a living and bring up their kids and living on the poverty line for it. We shouldn’t have to resort to bad foods for our kids however, what else can we do – let them starve! I am sick and tired of the way this Island is going and the way that everyone moans about something but yet does nothing about it. It is about time a change was made to the way people think in this Island forget the past look to the future and what we are leaving for the next generation to sort out – to be honest its not fair and its certainly not right!!!! Roll on October and November – States members better be preparing their CV’s for their new jobs!!!!
