New report wanted on supermarket

THE Jersey Chamber of Commerce are pleading with politicians to provide an independent investigation of the possible effects of a third major supermarket in Jersey.

The Chamber say that the Island’s competition regulator, the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority, is ‘stonewalling’ their concerns.

Chamber president Clive Spears said members had had an ongoing dialogue with the authority over the past six months and met the JCRA again on Friday, but to no avail. ‘The only thing we agreed is that it was pointless in exchanging correspondence further as there was no appetite whatsoever to alter their advice.

‘We were told all the issues we raised were outside of Article 6.4 of the Competition Law. We remain very concerned that the checks and balances available in the UK do not seem to be deployed in Jersey,’ he said.
