Sharp takes slow boat to certificate
Wednesday 9th July 2008, 2:58PM BST.
JERSEY sailor Phil Sharp can now work as a professional skipper having passed his Royal Yachting Association Yachtmaster exam.
Despite winning his class in last year’s Route du Rhum event, Sharp has had no formal sailing qualifications.
However his achievements include three races across the Atlantic solo and in pairs, round Britain and numerous other coastal races, which means he has more than met the required 2,500 miles sailing that is necessary to take the exam.
Operations Manager and instructor at Jersey Sailing Alex Thelland spent past weekends with Sharp in preparation for his assessment, taking him through many of the drills and tasks that he was expected to perform in yesterday’s assessment.
