Couldn’t they see the signs?

From John Rice.
IN the editorial of 9 July you state that those responsible for GST are in all probability cursing an incidence of bad timing which, to be fair, was not of their making.

When you get 19,000 people bothering to sign a petition, it could well mean that there was a huge majority of people who were against GST.

However, this was overridden by those who thought they knew best and/or didn’t want to lose face. Can it be possible that our Treasury department had no inkling of the financial problems that were waiting round the corner?

I can tell you that posters on the message boards have been prophesying that there will be a downturn in the economy for at least six months.
