You couldn’t make it up
Saturday 19th July 2008, 10:00AM BST.
From Terry Connor.
YOU really couldn’t make it up if you tried, could you?
If you were asked to locate on a small island (say 49 square miles) a very large, very ugly, potentially dangerous building which emitted toxic fumes, where would you place it?
Well, you would consider the aesthetics, allow for the prevailing southerly winds, and take into account traffic congestion and accessibility, high population density and regional commercial activity, and hey presto, it must obviously be in the centre of the busy, highly visible centre of the south coast – where you can also plan to build more accommodation units to maximise the risk of any unforeseeable events – so that you can advertise your empathy, foresight and competence to new arrivals.
In order to disguise its presence, you would naturally hire some highly paid world-acclaimed artist to decorate it with kitsch and label it ‘iconic’ to attract tourists.
The easy part, of course, would be getting more than half the local political product to endorse your insanity.
