Parasites? You read it in the FT first

From Pat Lucas.
ROD Bryan’s letter (JEP, 23 July) misses the point being made by John Christensen when he referred to the slave trade.
A shift of mood is under way. The reference to the slave trade links to a quotation on the cover of Christian Aid’s recent report titled ‘Death and Taxes’, which states:
‘For the first time in the 200-year run of the free market system, we have built and expanded an integrated financial structure the basic purpose of which is to shift money from the poor to the rich.
‘It is the ugliest chapter in global economic affairs since slavery.’
This quotation originates from Raymond Baker, a senior fellow at the US Center for International Policy and a guest scholar at the Brookings Institute.
The reference to parasites, at which Mr Bryan’s letter scoffs, originates from a Financial Times editorial published on 5 March this year which stated: ‘Tax havens which help evaders, and enjoy high levels of per capita income for their own small populations as a result, are parasitic.’
Unequivocal stuff.
The times, as the man said, are a-chan-ging. Jersey should react sooner rather than later to this important shift.

Sounds about right, the finance came here in the sixties and sucked the life blood out of our island and exploited the poor around the globe in the process, roll on its demise ,then lets get back to reality.

Sorry, but this is utter tosh. What the hell has the slave trade got to do with Jersey’s finance industry? Act before its too late? What are these people on?
