Support grows for banned clubbers
Wednesday 30th July 2008, 2:59PM BST.
THE plight of the Jersey clubbers who were refused entry into Havana because of their size has attracted unprecedented national attention.
With now more than 1,300 hits on their Facebook page calling for a boycott and protest at the club, as well as numerous national headlines and radio bulletins, support for the barred clubbers is growing by the hour.
On Saturday night the group of large women soon became friends after finding themselves stranded on the doorstep of the Halkett Street nightclub.
With preparations for Friday evening’s protest in the Royal Square gathering pace, the women were out in force yesterday handing out fliers in town.

In “defense” of Mr Martin sayers my wife and i used to go there frequently when we first got married.
He was a very nice guy who would always stop for a chat and was very complimentary to us both.
We always dress as nice as possible as going out is an occassion so to speak.
A little bit of effort costs nothing and people do tend to treat us with respect.
We were away for about a year or so and Mr sayers approached us and told us he had missed seeing us in his establishment. He then presented us with a bottle of champagne in a bucket.
I think this is blown out of proportion.
The expression says treat as you find and Mr sayers was very nice to us.
People love to kick someone when there chips are down whatever happened to turn the other cheek.

This really is boring and pathetic, and you find that alot of the people that joined this facebook group only joined to tell these so called “victims” that they’re being stupid and there only victims of their greed

I expect the ‘protesters’ will love to wax lyrical of how they are:
* United by discrimination
* Wronged by society that places so much on image and appearance, not what is ‘inside you’
* Not to blame for their large size – always some other reason except idleness
etc etc etc etc etc
I hope it pours with rain on Saturday night and all the tubbies get drenched!!!

I noticed that a lot of you are against Fat people and you are here saying that the manager was correct. Then why is he struggling for business? are you not going to support him by visiting his club? with all the comments on this site against Fat people i can not understand why he is not making a fortune yet he is closing up to move to another site.

I just don’t get it… surely fat people would drink more since they’ve got a larger capacity. Therefore, if one fat person drinks the equivalent of three thin people.. surely you’d want as many “perma-hungry” in the place as possible!

Mr Sayers has a point, obese people take up more room and it is at the end of the day his club and he can decide who he lets in (like a private members club).
Some American airlines have been more forthright in this matter by charging people for two seats, not only because they take up 2 seats but the extra weight adds to fuel costs. It probably will in the long run be beneficial to these people’s health to slim down. Mr Sayers is doing them a favour.
I do agree however it is sexist as the ban should apply to men also.

“also its fat people so thee opinion doesnt matter”
Pardon? Fat people do not matter? Funny how fat people are considered lessor humans. What is it that makes some feel superior to others? We are all of value, regardless of size, age, colour, faith … What has the world come to?

WILL THE ROYAL SQUARE BE BIG ENOUGH ?

I know Martin well and he is a well-meaning, generous person, though not always tactful – and needs to loose a bit of weight himself! I heard that he apologised publicly and I feel sure that he would have been sincere about it. Can’t we forgive and forget?

I have been to the Havana a couple of times and have never been able to even get as far as the dance floor because of the crush. Barring fatties (of either sex) may be an answer but some of them do have a lot to offer! What is really needed is a bigger venue.

This is an outrage. I hope everybody who appreciates freedom will take their business elsewhere. Nobody has the right to decide the size another person should be. Fat is not offensive. Ignorance and violation of civil liberties is.

Pure discrimination. Why don’t the authorities close the club upcoming weekend?

I am shocked at the nasty and vilifying comments posted. The extent of sizism is so prevelant. They are like school yard bullies. Give them all another 10yrs and lets see how they feel when they have lost their now slinder bodies.

For an affluent area, Jersey does seem to have a disproportionate percentage of overweight people.

I cannot believe the amount of time people are wasting on this issue.
Instead of worrying about the fact over weight people can’t get into nightclubs how about thinking of and doing something to help those people who are so poverty stricken they are starving to death.
The fact this has been mentioned on radio stations and in papers on the mainland is an embarassment to the Island and infact giving people across the channel further reason to laugh at us Islanders.
As an aside, I’m sure that most of the people who will waste their Friday night protesting in the Royal Square (for what exactly I’m still trying to work out) are people who know nothing about local politics and would never be bothered to use their vote.
I find it remarkable that some people showing support are making reference to the fact that people, no matter what their colour, faith, sexuality are can include size in this list. Most people have control over their size which of course they couldn’t over their colour, faith and to an extent sexuality. Please don’t lump this discrimination in the same catagory.
