Syvret to take Straw to court
Thursday 31st July 2008, 2:58PM BST.
SENATOR Stuart Syvret revealed today that he has formally notified Jack Straw – the UK Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor – that he intends to take him to court.
The Senator claims that the Labour minister (pictured) has failed to meet his obligations under the European Court of Human Rights to ensure that Jersey child abuse victims are treated fairly by the Island’s legal system.
He said today that those failures included not intervening to ensure that victims had access to an independent legal system and that the children had a right to family life.
Senator Syvret added that he, along with UK MPs Austin Mitchell and John Hemming, had served the Home Secretary with a ‘formal notice’ that they intended to take legal action. However, no papers have yet been filed with the courts.
