Those good old days when a packet of cigarettes was sixpence

From G Thomson.
JOHN Christensen’s article in the JEP (18 July) was excellent.

The States say that we have to grow, and they are not talking about daffodils. The only industry we have left is finance. I reckon that the EU countries will take note and will be working on stopping money slipping through their finances.

In pre-1939 days, when Grey’s cigarettes were 6d for 20, the pace of life was slower and people came to Jersey to relax. This continued after the war.

Now the pace is the same as in the UK, and tourism has virtually gone — even the Tour-ism office has gone into hiding.
The States have changed so many things . . . even the green zone can mean concrete which has been painted green.
We have a Senator who says that Jersey is as safe as it was 30 years ago. Like most people, I didn’t lock my front door or car door in the 1970s.

Another Senator says that GST on the shelf is carried out by a number of countries, but he has yet to name them.
Prior to GST being brought in, some retailers were saying that they would have to employ more staff if the tax was to be an ‘on the shelf’ system.

Maybe I misread in the JEP recently that they were now saying the opposite.
