Graham Power is calling on ministers to look at a range of options to fill the ranks and tackle the constabulary’s perennial recruitment problem.

He said that he was committed to recruiting locally, but stressed that he might be left with no choice other than to bring in more officers from the UK if more Islanders did not come forward. That is the route the Guernsey force has taken has taken to remedy its recruitment crisis.

Mr Power said that discussions were also taking place on the merits of raising the police retirement age from 50 to 55. A significant number of experienced officers have recently left the force on generous pensions to work in highly paid positions elsewhere in the public sector when they reached 50.

Rubbish. There are more than 10 candidates for each vacancy. There is no need to bring new police officers from the UK. Maybe it is time to consider people from local ethnic groups? More Portuguese, more Polish, more French…

I wanted to join the police when I left school in 1984. They would not even look at my application because I require glasses for driving. I wonder if this daft rule still exists, so perhaps that is why they are short of applicants.

If an officer’s eyesite deteriorates due to age, does he get the sack?

Perhaps Chief Officer Mr Power should start looking at why so many Police Officers have left the Force in recent times. I served with The States Of Jersey Police for 12 years and i am now serving in Western Australia Police after leaving Jersey in December 2007. I certainly would have not moved to Australia if i was content back in Jersey. I am sure most islanders know that morale within the States of Jersey Police is at an all time low. I wonder if anyone would be brave enough to ask why?
