Stores support end of GST on food

0483440_cropped.jpgJERSEY’S two supermarket groups have said that they would ‘strongly support’ the removal of GST from food to help tackle the soaring cost of living in the Island.

The Co-op said that it would ‘welcome the move with open arms’ – even though it would cost more than £20,000 to reorganise its stores.

And Sandpiper CI, which runs the Island’s Checkers and Marks and Spencer stores, said that it would approve of any decision which helped customers to cope with soaring costs.

They spoke out after the Council of Ministers called an emergency meeting to discuss ways to tackle the increasing cost of food and energy bills, and to control the increases in petrol prices.
