THE Attorney General, William Bailhache, has defended Jersey’s ability to prosecute people charged under the historical abuse investigation on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

Mr Bailhache said that he would do his job ‘fearlessly’ and that the Island had been successfully dispensing justice for centuries and would continue to do so.

Asked about a House of Commons Early-Day Motion tabled by Austin Mitchell MP about dealing with the cases outside the Jersey justice system and the ten MPs who had signed it, Mr Bailhache said: ‘My instinctive answer is that they may have been believing too much of what they read, and if you believe everything you read in the media, you might have cause for concern. So far, what I have read does not bear too much relationship to what I understand the position to be locally.

‘So if those MPs wish to make further inquiries, they can certainly get in touch with me and I will do my best to answer their particular questions.
