Park needs a visit

From Jeff Le Caudey.
IN the mid-1830s, discussions and plans were afoot to build a prestigious college in the Island. Progress was slow, as all aspects of the matter had to be considered at length.

Then, in 1846, a young and vivacious Queen Victoria paid Jersey a three-hour visit. This inspired the movers and shakers of the time to hurriedly upgrade their project. It would be Victoria College — hurrah! And it only took another six years.

In the year 2000, plans were already afoot for a Millennium Park on the old Gas Works site. Now, eight years on, it still looks like a car park.

It is interesting to note that in 1847 our independence from Great Britain was being questioned and argued.
