Jackie Donald, who lives in St Lawrence, works as a company researcher and administrator. However, she gives up most of her weekends and other spare time to act as the Miss Battle and Miss Junior Battle chaperone and co-ordinator. Married to Alan, she has a daughter called Emma Jayne and a step-daughter called Finleigh.

What does your role involve?
Initially organising the Miss Battle and Miss Junior competitions and thereafter looking after Miss Battle’s diary and attending various events with her in the run-up to Battle day. It also involves arranging for her to have her Battle dress made and many other things which enable her and the Miss Junior to have a memorable year, and overall providing her with advice and generally being a friend.

How long have you done it for?
 Six years.

Why do you do it?
Being local, I have a passion for the Battle of Flowers and want to see it continue. By contributing in this way it ensures that this kind of event can hopefully continue. For me it’s great to see the reaction of the Miss Battles each year knowing that I have helped (hopefully) to make their dream come true.

Is there anyone who helps you to carry out your role successfully?
Lynne Hind.

Prior to carrying out this role, were you involved in the Battle in any other ways?
I was maid of honour in 1987 when the DJ Mike Read was Mr Battle and I had been in the parade previously as a Jersey Majorette for many years. I also helped with St Helier’s float.

Where will you be during the parade?
Walking alongside and guarding the Miss Battle float.

What do you like about the Battle of Flowers?
The buzz and general atmosphere, particularly on the night before.

Why do you think that the parade still has an important role to play in Jersey life?
It is part of Jersey. It brings people of all ages together in the months before the Battle and many friendships are formed. The parade itself shows what a small community can achieve and brings enjoyment to both locals and tourists. It is also one of the most spectacular flower parades in the world and gives Jersey something to be proud of.
