Jones conquers Lake Zurich
Tuesday 5th August 2008, 2:59PM BST.
LONG distance swimmer Ian Jones added another remarkable achievement to his sporting CV over the weekend, with a superb performance in the Lake Zurich Marathon swim
After taking a gruelling 7 hr 39 min to cover the 26.4 km race from Rapperswil to Zurich, the 35-year-old finished fifth overall and third in his age category (16-35). A proud medal winner, he also beat all the other racers in another section who were competing in wetsuits.
Conditions were very different to the training waters of Jersey, with the lake’s fresh water giving less buoyancy but at 22C it felt positively tropical, with fine weather making for wonderful swimming conditions.
Said the Cenkos employee: ‘It was a lovely swim, with flat calm and warm waters but still a tough one – the fresh water meant I had to work harder to stay buoyant.’
