A SURF school manager who rescued a man from the sea at the Watersplash as big waves hit the wall on Saturday evening has been praised by a holidaymaker for his bravery.

The actions of Jersey Surf School manager Jim Hughes (pictured) to help Graham Young (32) as he tried to get back ashore with his bodyboard at around 6.30 pm while being lifted up by the waves were witnessed by visitor Katie Heywood from Devon.

She said: ‘The surf teacher unbelievably jumped straight in with a rescue surfboard and battled through the high seas to help the man out. It took about 20 minutes. I have never seen anyone battle for another person quite like that.’

And a canoeist was rescued from rocks at Rozel on Friday evening after being trapped by a strong current. His rescuer, trust administrator Jonathan Billot, was in a dinghy in Rozel Harbour at 5.30 pm on his way out to his small fishing boat when a woman canoeist paddled up to him and said that she had become separated from the man out on the sea with her.
