BBC radio presenter dies at 46
Wednesday 6th August 2008, 2:59PM BST.
BBC Radio Jersey’s popular breakfast show presenter, John Uphoff, died this morning in Southampton Hospital.
The presenter, who was 46, had been in a coma for three weeks suffering from meningitis, encephalitis and listerial blood poisoning.
Since news of his illness was announced several weeks ago, the radio station has been inundated with messages of goodwill from the many listeners whose days he brightened up by taking a look at Island issues and giving them his wry, often irreverent, view of them.
Mr Uphoff became ill on Friday 11 July with abdominal pains and was admitted to the General Hospital before being transferred to Southampton. Complications developed and he was moved to the neurological unit. Many of the messages from members of the community he served were forwarded to him and his wife in Southampton.
