Battle people: Jennifer Lapidus
Thursday 7th August 2008, 3:00PM BST.
The Battle of Flowers office at Meadowbank has become a second home for Jennifer Lapidus over the past few months.
She took over from Terry Avery as chief executive officer only in April, but has already become a strong member of the Battle fold. A resident of St Martin, she is married to Robyn and has three step-children.
What does your role involve?
Co-ordinating all aspects on behalf of the Battle Board, including sorting out seating and ticket sales, transporting equipment to the Island and co-ordinating the corporate hospitality area.
How long have you done it for?
Since 1 April.
Why do you do it?
Having been event managing some of Jersey’s largest happenings for a number of years, I felt that being involved with Battle would be the icing on the cake.
Were you involved in Battle before,
in any way?
After we moved to St Martin last year I spent an afternoon pulling off thousands of flower heads for their float. There was a sea of blocks of flowers. It was being there that made me realise how much work goes into the Battle. I have really enjoyed being able to go around all the floats this year.
Where will you be during the parade?
Probably up a scaffolding tower making sure I can see everything that goes on in the arena.
What do you like about the Battle of Flowers?
That so many people from different walks of life are involved. The Battle of Flowers is the largest tourism event and one of the most important events in the Island. It is a unique festival and I just think that it is the community spirit that makes it. To see the effort and hard work of Islanders that go into preparing for the Battle, culminating in this big event, is fantastic.
Why has the parade still an
important role to play in Jersey life?
It is Jersey life.
