Battle people: Norman Parslow
Saturday 9th August 2008, 10:00AM BST.
AS a builder by trade, when exhibits director Norman Parslow sees floats going down Victoria Avenue he knows exactly how much effort has gone into building them and the work that has been involved in getting their mechanics and moving parts working well. The 72-year-old is married to Paula and the couple live in Grouville.
What does your role involve?
Making sure that all of the exhibits have everything they need and are put in the right order, for both the Battle of Flowers and the Moonlight Parade. It also involves liaising with exhibitors prior to the parade and doing things such as collecting back all their prizes from the previous year.
How long have you done it for?
I have carried out this role for two years.
Why do you do it?
Because having been involved in the Battle of Flowers for more than 50 years with my family and friends on the Beeches Old Boys Association’s float, I know what a fantastic example it is of great Jersey spirit.
Anyone who helps you to carry out your role successfully?
Basil Chall, Lynne Hind and our exhibits secretary Kathy Gill.
Prior to carrying out this role were you involved in the Battle in any other ways?
For the past ten years I have been looking after the exhibits, measuring and judging the set pieces. Prior to that I was involved with the Beeches Old Boys Association’s float for more than 50 years.
Where will you be during the parade?
At the First Tower end of the arena, making sure that all of the exhibits are in order.
What do you like about the Battle of Flowers?
In Jersey it is one of the main community events now left for families.
Why do you think that the parade still has an important role to play in Jersey life?
It keeps people interested in parishes and clubs and it is one of the major tourism events of the year.
