Fire campaign success
Saturday 9th August 2008, 10:00AM BST.
THE Make a Plan campaign is today being brought to a close after helping an unprecedented number of Islanders to protect themselves against house fires.
Only two months ago the JEP joined forces with the Fire and Rescue Service to urge Islanders to fit smoke alarms and make a fire escape plan. And in those eight weeks 413 residents have asked for a home fire safety check – more than double the number of requests usually made in an entire year.
Today, after being inundated with requests from Islanders, chief fire officer Mark James said: ‘The Make a Plan campaign has been an overwhelming success. It has made a lot of people aware of the dangers of house fires and has helped a lot of Islanders to improve fire safety in their homes.
‘The campaign has greatly improved fire safety across the Island and will hopefully reduce the number of people being killed or seriously injured.’
