00295939_cropped.jpgA LOVE of the Battle of Flowers prompted Kevin Keen to join the parade’s Association last year.

And as an accountant by profession, the role of the parade’s finance director seemed like the one that was perfect for him. The 50-year-old lives in St John. Married to Christine he has three daughters called Victoria, Charlotte and Philippa.

What does your role involve?
Looking after the finances, supporting the board in planning for the future, maintaining contacts with the business community and seeking sponsorship.

How long have you done it for?
Since March 2007

Why do you do it?
Because I believe that the Battle is a very important event for the community and felt it only right to do something to help. Victoria, my daughter, was Miss Battle 2005 and Charlotte was Miss St John last year. Philippa has participated and Christine my wife has made costumes in the past. They all really enjoyed their involvement.

Where will you be during the parade?
Watching the event, entertaining our VIPs and thinking about next year.

What do you like about the Battle of Flowers?
It involves so many of our community, the vast majority of whom are working on a voluntary basis to create a spectacle to entertain our guests. It encapsulates what is so good about the traditional Jersey way. Hard working, welcoming, supportive, competitive and very creative.

Why do you think that the parade still has an important role to play in Jersey life?
The way it involves such a broad spectrum of Islanders of all ages and from all walks of life. The result of their work is nothing short of spectacular.
