Investigation into ‘price fixing’ by cab drivers
Tuesday 12th August 2008, 2:59PM BST.
JERSEY cab drivers are under investigation for fixing prices.
An investigation is being carried out by Jersey’s competition watchdog into price-fixing by the Jersey Cab Drivers Association.
But the former president of the group, Sean Courtney, says that although the group agrees prices, they do so ‘fairly and squarely’.
Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority executive director Chuck Webb confirmed that the investigation was being carried out. He said: ‘All I can say is that it is a pending investigation right now, and that because of that I cannot comment. But I can say that it concerns registered taxicabs and that we are in discussions with them. Other than that I cannot say anything.’

I paid £19 to get from Gorey to St Thomas’s church, at 10.30 am on a Saturday. Either certain taxi drivers are cheating their customers (this was a private taxi firm), or taxi prices are completely out of control!

why is this not a surprise?

Nothing will be done about this and as a regular user of RANK TAXIS I would like to say that the RANK fares are MUCH less than using “cab companies”.
ps some people don’t know the difference between the two ie a cab works from a depot and a rank taxi works from the ranks in town, harbour or airport. I have seen “cabs” picking up at the harbour and airport and I doubt if they charge the correct tarrif.

RANK = Pick up in street/rank – Not pre-orderable
CABS = Come to your front door and are pre-arranged hence why they cost more.
CABS are seen up at the airport and harbour because they are either waiting for passengers who prebooked or are assisting as no RANK taxis are available.

The difference between a cab and a taxi?
A 2.30 am taxi from Weighbridge to mine two weeks ago was surprisingly £8. A cab flagged down near West Park roundabout (a short distance closer to home) same time a week later, just under £15.

to colins posting,on aug 14/08.
why pay the bigger fare without.a protest to the DVS, WHICH IS WHERE ALL PROBLEMS WITH TAXI/CABS FARES SHOULD GO,NOT MOAN AND DO NOTHING ABOUT IT,IF YOU DO NOT PROTEST TO DVS,HOW CAN THIS BE STOPPED,THERE IS GOOD AND BAD IN EACH SIDE OF THE TRADE,IF YOU THINK YOU ARE BEING OVERCHARGED (RIPPED OFF)ASK FOR A RECEPT BEFORE PAYING, NO RECEPT NO FARE,IT’S AS EASY AS THAT.LET HIM CALL THE POLICE IT WILL ONLY COST THE DRIVER, MORE IN WASTE OF TIME AWAITING THE POLICE TO ARRIVE ON THE SCENE

Unless I am unaware of some differences between Rank taxis & cabs, that they require differing fares, fares should be set by an indepedant body – to be fair to both taxis/cabs & the customer. I would suggest something like that of the bus fares so that a customer would know, in advance, exactly what the fare would cost to travel from A to B. To take into account trips taken over the weekend/after hours/bank holidays – a rate structure could be set up for this – for example 25% (or whatever) of the normal daily fares.
Everybody would know exactly where they stood and best of all, any overcharging would stick out like the proverbial sore thumb!

Will we, as users, be made aware of the outcome of the “investigation”?
In reply to Ian look at previous postings to see the differences between “CABS” and TAXIS”.

In answer to Eric’s post no. 6. I wasn’t individually ripped off, as the price is in line with other cabs I’ve caught home. It was just meant as a pointing out the taxi/cab difference comment.
An ideal solution to Jersey would be as per Casablanca’s Petit Taxi system (google it). You have the choice between nipping here and there in a cheaper small Panda style car, or booking a regular taxi, for example if you are going to do longer trip to the airport with luggage etc. However Jersey being Jersey would never go for something that would not earn top dollar!
