Opera House: It’s all change for the good
Tuesday 12th August 2008, 3:00PM BST.
From Jane Peters.
I FELT I must write to express my disagreement with Sue Lissenden’s letter about the Opera House.
Firstly let me say that the Opera House has changed over the last year. It shows a much wider range of entertainment, opening up the theatre that we all pay for to a much wider section of the community.
There have been many children’s shows, for example Sooty, and many stand-up comics. My son and his friends had never been to the Opera House before this. But it also shows opera and ballet. Surely this is an example of a balanced programme for everyone, not just a small pocket of the community of which Mrs Lissenden seems to be a part.
Since the Opera House reopened I had only been twice, most of the time feeling uncomfortable at being in ‘their Opera House’ but no more. In the last 12 months I have been seven times. Can Mrs Lissenden please tell me why in her opinion I and my family do not count as an appropriate section of the community to go the Opera House?
My final point is that the current administration has managed to keep the theatre open without losing large sums of money, but maybe it would be better if we had a programme full of plays and a personal website you cannot book, on so that Mrs Lissenden and her friends can go to the Opera House and think what a good job they have done in supporting that theatre, until it closes a few months later.
