The lawsuit, proposed by Senator Stuart Syvret (pictured) and UK MPs Austin Mitchell and John Hemming, will seek to force Jack Straw to appoint UK judges and prosecutors to handle charges arising from the investigation. The three politicians say that the UK government has both the authority and the responsibility to step in and enforce the rule of law in the Island.

A fortnight ago they formally notified Mr Straw – the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice – that they would take him to court over what they describe as his failure to ensure that Jersey’s child abuse victims are treated fairly.

And yesterday, Mr Hemming – the Liberal Democrat MP for Birmingham Yardley – said that the lawsuit could be filed with the courts as early as tomorrow. He said that the legal papers would be based on article six of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Please let somebody come in to our island and give these poor alleged victims some hope they might get a fair hearing. They will not get it if it is left up to our “dictatorship”
