Why doesn’t St Helier enter a float – especially when it benefits financially?

From Patricia Deveau.
I HAVE just noted from your list (JEP, 9 August) of the Battle of Flowers floats that nine of the 12 parishes have entered floats.

Why were St John, St Ouen and St Helier not there, especially St Helier, as they gain financially from the event? Surely all the parishes should endeavour to send in an exhibit?

In my younger days I was a photographer and always attended the Battle of Flowers to take photos. There were many more floats, fancy dress entries, big heads – where have they gone? There were also several bands and dancing girls.

I myself helped to make costumes for the Hotel and Caterers’ float, which is no longer an entry as we don’t seem to have many hotels or guest houses in Jersey.

I feel sure that many people in Jersey would like to be involved in helping to make the Battle of Flowers as fantastic as it used to be, but they probably don’t know how to go about offering support.

Perhaps the JEP could help in this respect by letting the general public know where to apply to offer their expertise as designers, builders, costume makers and general helpers.
