Galaad’s 44th march to Battle
Friday 15th August 2008, 2:58PM BST.
ISLAND churches and parishioners have been involved with the Battle of Flowers effort.
One has helped to create the Medieval Mayhem float which joined 27 other floats for the procession down Victoria Avenue yesterday.
The float was created by Galaad and Friends and depicted a medieval tournament complete with a king and queen, knights and jousting.
The Galaad Methodist Church – aka Galaad and Friends – merged with The Bay Methodist Church some years ago but the group kept the original name for the sake of continuity.
It is the 44th year that Galaad and Friends have entered a float into the event and previous enthemes include nursery rhymes, old times and westerns.
Martin Bisson, a member of Galaad and Friends since 1976, said that creating the float was now more of a community event rather than something involving just parishioners, with people from across the island taking part.
He has been working on the float at his base at Willow Farm, St Lawrence, since June.
He said that all ages, from six-year-olds to a 94-year-old, got involved with building the float by cutting flowers pasting them onto the float.
