Sunny side up
Friday 15th August 2008, 2:00PM BST.
THE circus came to town yesterday – and picked up first prize.
Thousands of Islanders and holidaymakers lined Victoria Avenue to see the Optimists Club take the Prix d’Honneur for the tenth time since 1987 at the 2008 Battle of Flowers. The club last won the Prix d’Honneur in 2005 and gained second place in last year’s parade. Parish floats from St Saviour and Trinity respectively won the Prix d’Excellence and the Prix des Paroisses.
Stress over rotten flowers and worries about a wet and windy parade all proved to be unfounded, with some of the most visually stunning floats in the Battle’s 106-year history on display and glorious sunshine throughout the afternoon. Battle chairman Tony Perkins said: ‘It was an excellent parade, and that has been endorsed by everyone I have spoken to. Our salvation was the superb weather.’
Mr Battle, TV star Christopher Biggins, had never seen the event before but said that the parade had exceeded all his expectations. Miss Battle 2008, Holly Fraser, who wore a champagne-coloured lace dress, said that it had been her dream day. ‘I feel amazing,’ she said. ‘Everyone involved is so happy. The sun has been shining and the crowd has been wonderful. I have loved every minute of it and the day has definitely showed off Jersey at its best.’
