What are our politicians doing on the carbon front?

From Peter Utley.
IN the UK and Europe plans have been made to cut carbon emissions and to meet the agreed renewable energy targets by 2020.

The very survival of the planet depends on these targets being met. Well-informed scientific opinion is that these targets are, in fact, set too low.

Approval has been given in Britain for two large wind farms which will provide the power required for over 200,000 homes. Hydro-electric schemes are also under development to contribute millions of watts of power to the national grid.

There is now a great demand for the material and machinery to set up all forms of renewable energy. A thriving industry has been born which is quite likely to rival the great industries past and present. An expanding field of research now requires part-production, fabrication and building practice.

A recent article in the JEP announced the transfer of Renewable Energy Generation Ltd from Guernsey to Jersey. This company, under the chairmanship of Mike Liston, is already well advanced in the production of wind farm installation and is moving into the field of micro-generation.

Is it not time for the States of Jersey to inform the public, who elect and pay them, what plans they have for this Island to play its part in achieving the 2020 targets for renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions and to end further production of dangerous nuclear waste?
