Moonlight parade: ‘The best so far’

Saturday 16th August 2008, 10:00AM BST.

00582428_cropped.jpgTHOUSANDS of Islanders and tourists came out to party last night at the 18th Battle of Flowers Moonlight Parade.

The event – which featured the stunning floats in all of their dazzling night-time glory – is already being hailed by many spectators and exhibitors as one of the best Moonlight Parades to date, with fantastic weather playing a key part in its success.

The event saw the floats from Thursday’s Battle of Flowers transformed with a multitude of sparkling lights. And after months of hard work and effort, last night’s parade, as ever, provided everyone involved in the Battle with the opportunity to let their hair down and party.

While all of the floats looked stunning, it was the parish of St Mary who picked up the award for the best illuminated float – for their Harry Potter themed exhibit, Hogwarts Class of 2008. The best lit junior award went to St Peter’s Juniors for Magical Garden. Meanwhile it was yesterday’s Prix d’Honneur winners, the Optimists, Club who were awarded for having the best Moonlight carnival atmosphere – on their Circus exhibit.

The Battle of Flowers evening parade was indeed spectacular and for St Marys to have won the award for the best alluminated float was quite an achievment. What was disappointing in your full report on pages 14 and 15 that there was not a picture of the float. Several people mentioned this to me and were very surprised. When I found out that St Marys had won I quickly purchased 2 extra copies of the JEP to send to friends in the UK expecting to find a picture of the winning float. I later found out that other people had had the same idea! Is there any chance that you could still put a picture in the JEP?
    Thank you

I would just like to say in contrast to the comments above i was surprised The Optimists Club didn’t win with thier fantastic Circus float. It really stood out to me and i felt they really enhanced the float which looked just as fantastic in the day. Great job with the lighting Optimist Club.

I’ve visited Jersey for a number of years now and always promised myself I would one day make it for the Battle of the Flowers. I made it this year and was very impressed. “I’ll be back” for more.
