The first meeting of the Jersey branch of the Chartered Institute of Taxation is taking place on Monday 22 September at the Grand Hotel, from 5 pm to 8 pm, when the guest speaker will be Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur.

Branch chairman-elect John Shenton, pictured, said there had been a fair amount of interest in setting up a branch of the institute in previous years, but this time more potential committee members had come forward.

‘As a trigger the institute send members a request every year, and it seems that there are now around 200 members in Jersey, either qualified tax advisers or registered as students,’ explained Mr Shenton.

‘The idea behind forming the branch is to act as a go-between for the regulator, the adviser and the taxpayer. With all the recent changes, such as GST, now seemed a good time to set something up.

‘It will give us the opportunity to represent the industry on tax policy and to work with the tax office – everything is new for them, as it is for us.’
