The face is familiar but . . .

00535217_cropped.jpgA PICTURE published previously of the police inter-insular football match in 1952 has prompted a number of Islanders to contact us with names to fill the gaps.

Les Sutcliffe, having been prompted by his grand-daughter Aimée, was able to name the majority of the team. In the end he was at a loss for only one name.

Mr Sutcliffe joined the police force in 1952 and left in the late 1970s.

We also had contact from Maureen English whose father, Harry Gould, is in the picture. Harry was a sergeant until he retired but died in 1975 aged only 54. Dawn Flanagan, whose father, Dennis Liot, had been a police constable and was in the picture, was also able to identify a couple of faces.

From their information we are now missing only one name from the 1952 team and the line-up now reads as follows:
Back row (left to right): Tommy Cross, Harry Gould, ?, Doug de Gruchy, Dennis Liot, Ted Cockerham (who later became chief Officer), Joe Berry and E H Le Brocq.

Front row: Ray Medder, Jock Neely, Danny Joyce, Henry (Harry) Robinson and Eric Lidster.
If you can name the man third from the left on the back row and fill in this last gap please get in touch on 611755 or by e-mail to features@jerseyeveningpost.com.
