This tragedy highlights the dangers of Jersey’s shores

THE recent sad tragedy in the sea in St Brelade’s Bay highlights the dangers of swimming in certain conditions especially for visitors to our shores and those unaccustomed in the ways of the sea.
These tempting and seemingly innocuous waters belie the hazards when there is a spring tide combined with a swell and/or strong winds. The tide is also running at its strongest at about one to two hours or so before and after high water.
The conditions on Sunday were potentially dangerous. I was swimming in St Brelade’s Bay at about 6 pm with some of my family and we noticed a strong undertow.
The late Constance Brown, or Consie as she was affectionately known, made countless rescues in the surf here, in between running her beach café and serving ice cream. She was eventually awarded the MBE for her humanitarian deeds.
