Shop managers, take note

From Alan Nicolle.
I WAS interested to read J Blackmore’s letter (JEP, 19 August) concerning the lack of interest of staff in many shops. I am local and not alone I might add, to be treated with a lack of interest when attempting to purchase goods. This attitude is general and management/shop owners wonder why many locals now purchase goods over the Internet.
Last year I attempted to purchase some quality floor rugs, this being in the order of £1,000. The sales assistant was generally unhelpful and frankly treated the sale with virtual contempt. Taking this point a little further, it would not be impossible for, say, 50 customers with a similar value of orders to enter that store every week. That would equate to £2,600,000 in a year. Quite a loss to that establishment.
A second establishment was equally useless. I returned home having wasted two hours and feeling angry and totally disgusted. My fingers then did the walking othe keyboard, found exactly what I was looking for on a web page. My order was delivered in ten days with a saving of £250

I use the internet for shopping, local shops use staff who are poorly trained, surly, rude ,etc. The old values have long gone, a plus factor using the net is they remove the vat , pay the shipping and are actually quite pleasant on the telephone.

Mr Nicolle – you should have gone to Gilleys in New Street – you can’t beat this local Jersey owned shop for service and putting themselves out to get hold of what the customer wants at a reasonable price! I wanted to replace a Chinese rug which I had bought at de Gruchys at least 4 years previously for £350. De Gruchys no longer sold this type of rug and Le Gallais wanted £250 for the same rug. Gilleys brought me one back from a sales trip – cost under £150 and in Jersey within a couple of weeks!!! Nowadays I always go there first as nothing is ever too much trouble for them. There are a few old Jersey shops left – Pearce the Jewellers, Hamons, Amys – always excellent service, polite and extremely helpful and generally cheaper than their big competitors, plus you know you are getting good quality. If they don’t have it in stock they’ll order it and let you know when it comes in – unlike many of the UK chain store branches we have over here and don’t charge you in advance! Our market traders and sales staff in the fish market are also brilliant – even suggesting how to cook items if you ask them. The moral to this tale – buy locally from local shops and suppliers!
