JERSEY tennis player Scott Clayton won the Road to Wimbledon title with a super effort on Saturday – and was presented with the impressive trophy by former British No 1 Tim Henman.

The 14-year-old Millfield student, having knocked out his age group national champion in the semi-final, moved on the No 1 training court at the All England Club at Wimbledon, for the HSBC-sponsored final against Northumberland’s Ben Lott.

Playing on the famous grass courts in front of a good sized crowd didn’t faze the Jersey youngster who won the first set 6-1. Big-hitter Lott, the England No 7, responded well and levelled matters with a 6-3 success in the second. But Clayton changed his approach for the deciding third set, playing a more tactical game and employing a full range and mix of shots which helped him outmanouvre Lott. The 6-2 success earned Clayton the HSBC title, a handsome Waterford Crystal Bowl, a £500 coaching award and VIP tickets for next year’s Wimbledon Grand Slam championships.
