Move to close fire law loophole
Saturday 30th August 2008, 9:55AM BST.
OWNERS of flats and lodging houses could be forced to improve fire safety in the wake of the Broadlands inferno.
The Fire and Rescue Service wants to tighten up differences in the law regarding which type of properties need fire safety regulations.
It says that a number of property types in the Island do not currently need to enforce fire safety regulations because of loopholes in the law.
The Service is in discussion with others agencies, including the Housing Department, the Population Office and Health Protection, to decide how to ensure that the law ‘knits together’.
It expects to announce its conclusions later in the year.
