Olympians let their hair down in Jersey
Saturday 30th August 2008, 9:57AM BST.
TWO Olympic medallists are celebrating their win in Jersey this weekend – in fancy dress.
Gold medallist Mark Hunter and silver medallist Matthew Langridge, who were part of the British rowing team, were planning to party all weekend and let their hair down after undergoing a gruelling training programme for the last four years in preparation for the Beijing Olympics.
Mark – who collapsed and needed medical attention after winning Great Britain’s first ever gold medal in the lightweight men’s double skulls – spent yesterday at Havre des Pas swimming pool playing volleyball with his friends.
‘It’s my first time in Jersey and we are having a great time. It is actually the first time I have relaxed with my friends since the Games. I have been training for this for ten years and I am having some time out and having some fun.’
Reliving the moment he won the gold medal, he said: ‘I can’t remember finishing much. I was in such a bad way when we finished. I was being sick and all sorts. But the best thing was standing on that podium hearing the national anthem and getting the gold medal around my neck. It was a fantastic end to a long journey.’
Silver medallist Matthew Langridge, who was part of the Great Britain men’s eight crew, is also in Jersey with the group, which is made up of 15 members of a British rowing team from Oxfordshire.
