States elections: Tell us what you think
Wednesday 3rd September 2008, 2:52PM BST.
ON Wednesday 15 October, Islanders will go the polls to choose six Senators and nine Constables in one of the most important States elections of modern times.
With Jersey facing a series of major challenges ranging from the preservation of the countryside to the need for economic diversification, and from soaring prices to international pressure and the need to cope with an ageing population, there has rarely been a time when the community has been in greater need of capable and effective political representatives.
This election is also the first to be held since the introduction of ministerial government and will be followed by the new States Assembly choosing Jersey’s second Chief Minister. The concentrated powers enjoyed by the new Council of Ministers that will follow make it all the more important that men and women with real ability, clear beliefs and accountable policies are chosen by voters and that the public spells out in these elections, and those for parish Deputies being held on 26 November, what direction they want the Island to take.
To help readers make their choices, the JEP plans to put your key questions to the Senatorial candidates.
Let us know what you think are the important issues in this election and the questions you would like us to ask on your behalf. We will publish your views and also distil from them a series of questions to be put to all the candidates and published with their answers before polling takes place.

I believe that the Chief Minister must be chosen from a Senator which as we know is voted in by an all island vote. Then the States Members should decide who will be best as Chief Minister. All persons standing for Senator should therefore be standing for the position of Chief Minister. That way the people would have had there say in who should be Chief Minister. It does not have to be the poll topper but the best one for the position.

O Samson – The States voted for the last Chief Minister and look who we got. This time round it’s going to be Terry Le Sueur or Philip Ozouf if the States get to vote for Chief Minister again. If this happens we will get no constitutional reform whatsoever, Ministers will continue to make their decisions in secret, we’ll keep GST and it will go up dramaticaly in a couple of years, uncontrolled immigration will continue, the housing situtaion will worsen, our youngsters will continue to leave and we’ll be as badly off as we are now. In that case, is it worth bothering with an election at all? Please ask all prospective candidates if they will vote for Terry Le Sueur or Philip Ozouf as Chief Minister before you decide who to vote for. You will be surprised who would vote for them.
