Jersey could be forced to dig deep for India
Thursday 4th September 2008, 3:00PM BST.
THE chances of Jersey’s best athletes to attend future Commonwealth Games could be in jeopardy if sponsors are not found for the team travelling to next month’s Commonwealth Youth Games in India.
Up to another £10,000 is needed to cover remaining travel and accommodation costs for the four young swimmers, four athletes and four tennis players who hope to compete in Pune in October.
Education, Sport and Culture have pledged £6,000 to help the squad, and there have also been donations from the Royal Bank of Canada and the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, but if no further sponsor can be found to make up the shortfall, money set aside by the Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey – which is meant to help fund the main Games in 2010 – may have to be used.
