The victims are now just pawns
Friday 5th September 2008, 3:00PM BST.
From Astrid Kisch.
IT all started with compassion but Senator Stuart Syvret’s Haut de la Garenne fire is now out of control, being fanned by political troublemakers, outside publicity seekers and lawyers and QCs with big pockets.
The so-called victims will receive very little out of it. They are just pawns now. We have seen it all before with compensation schemes in Germany, Switzerland, Iraq and USA. Only the outside bigwigs benefit.
Here we are fretting over the 3% GST on food. The poor Jersey taxpayer has seen nothing yet when it comes to paying for Stuart’s fire. Even Jersey itself may be destroyed in the process. What a mess!

The ‘so called victims’! excuse me but there were once victims of abuse and they deserve to be heard, and Stuart Syvret is on their side, he seems to be the only one. You are one insensitive lady.

“so called victims” I am very sorry to say, are not ‘so called’ at all. They are obviously REAL!
This last writer speaks about “fire” too!
Have they never realised that where there’s smoke there’s fire, as the ancient saying goes?
Are we to believe, as this writer would have it, that the ENTIRE story and all its horrendous details are just a wild flight of fancy and imagination; a mad fabrication from a couple of disgruntled ex-boarders out for a quick buck?
I’m sorry; I do not swallow that one; neither do thousands of others!

Er, it didn’t all start with compassion.
It started with cruelty against children, followed by complaisance or complicity by the authorities, followed by a crass attempt to suppress the bad news, followed by the Jersey ‘old boy network’ trying to obstruct the investigation [cf Lenny Harper].
To suggest that Senator Syvret is responsible for the mess that Jersey is now in is like accusing the person who shouts ‘Fire’ of setting alight to the building.
No doubt the good burghers of Jersey would like this horrible nightmare to go away so the island can get back to business as usual, but what about the nightmares still suffered by adults who as children were tortured in your dungeons? Don’t you care about them?
