There is no need to ‘take to the streets’

From Jeff Le Caudey.
I WAS surprised that Esther Rantzen seemed to think that justice is not available in Jersey and that no effort will be made to arrest the perpetrators of any abuse unless there is a massive petition – also that we all need to ‘take to the streets’ before the abused can hope to get justice.
More than £6m has already been spent on the investigation and more is being made available. Many hundreds of man-hours have been worked by States police officers, members of the honorary police and officers drafted in from outside the Island as well as laboratory technicians on the mainland. Every one of them was, and is, dedicated to finding the truth and bringing any wrongdoers to justice.
Many people have been questioned and statements taken. People have been arrested, but conflicting witness statements meant that there was insufficient evidence for the police to act further. That is not ‘covering up’; that is the application of the law in a democracy.
Other cases are pending, but we all know – or we should all know – that the mills of justice can grind exceeding slow. But be warned . . . they get there!
I was also surprised that Ms Rantzen felt that there was ‘nothing particularly sinister about child abuse having occurred’. I am sure that those who were abused would hardly agree.
Something else which is sinister and wicked, and also downright insulting, is the continuous and facile mutterings about ‘cover-ups’. Also the suggestion that Jersey cannot be trusted to administer the law and that judges and lawyers should be brought in from outside. It implies that every Jersey person is at least corrupt, and possibly worse.
No doubt the world is watching. I would hope that by now it is beginning to see the truth.
