Young Catholics in Australia
Tuesday 9th September 2008, 8:00AM BST.
A GROUP of Catholic youths have come home from their pilgrimage to the world’s biggest youth event in Australia.
The group showed video footage of their pilgrimage, which took place in July, as well as photographs, at the service at St Mary and St Peter’s Church on Saturday.
The 41-strong party (pictured) bedded down on classroom floors in Sydney and in a church hall in Melbourne on their pilgrimage, which was for World Youth Day — the biggest youth event in the world. It saw 500,000 young Catholics converge on Sydney.
While they were in Australia the group slept at Xavier College in Llandilo, alongside a number of other visiting Catholic youths from the United States and Pakistan, and were supplied with jumpers and blankets by local Catholic groups.
And the support didn’t stop there. The young people found that local families were taking in their washing and preparing packed lunches, and a local baker even gave them a supply of fresh bread.
World Youth Day was a week-long series of events attended by the Pope as well as the hundreds of thousands of young people from all over the globe. The next event will be held three years from now in Madrid.
