Male chauvinists must be chuckling to themselves

From Cameron McPhail.
AS I read it, the ‘logic’ of Janice Eden’s somewhat sexist letter (JEP, 27 August) runs as follows:

•The Bailiff (male) allegedly had inadvertently allowed Nacer Benyoucef to evade justice and others had granted the defendant bail under inappropriate circumstances.
• The Deputy Bailiff (male) sentences Mr Benyoucef to 12 years for rape.
• The judiciary is dominated by men and is not independently elected.
• The States is dominated by men because women choose not to stand.
• The judiciary and the States are joined at the hip.
• Judges have a dual States/judicial role (actually not all judges).
• Separate the Bailiff’s two roles or appoint a woman to the role of Bailiff.

It is a difficult letter to follow, but that seems to be the essence of it. One alleged male mistake in a rape case could have been avoided if there were more women in the States, women were appointed to senior judicial roles and there was clear separation of the male Bailiff’s dual roles.

Unless, of course, the Bailiff was a woman, whereupon, as everyone knows, the ability of females to multi-task would overcome any problem with duality.

In four paragraphs, Ms Eden has undermined the case for equality. Male chauvinists across the Island must be quietly sipping their warm beers and chuckling to themselves.
Ms Eden is from Venus and I am from Mars.
