Laurens in pole position
Thursday 11th September 2008, 2:00PM BST.
PARALYMPIC dressage rider Simon Laurens could be on course for another gold medal after a fantastic performance in this morning’s individual freestyle to music test.
Laurens pulled off a score of 73.499 per cent earlier in the day – almost six per cent higher than the next-placed competitor – although six riders in his class are yet to go.
They include fellow team member Deborah Criddle and German rider Hannelore Brenner, who was the highest scoring individual in Sunday’s team test, and also won gold in the Individual Championship Test on Tuesday.
Laurens said he has been nervously counting down the minutes until the next session, which starts at 9.15 pm in Hong Kong (2.15 pm GMT). He said: ‘Six riders went this morning, and then six are due to go this evening, because it is too hot out here to compete in the day. So I’m very nervous at the moment – it might be tight.’
