It was the Island’s fourth ceremony to commemorate those who left Jersey before the Second World War and to remember those who died serving their country.

At the Albert Pier organiser Jean McLaughlin, who left the Island with her family during the Occupation, paid tribute to the people who lost their lives fighting. She said: ‘This service is for the many Jerseymen and women who went to England to join the Armed Forces, who gave us the freedom we all enjoy and take for granted today. They will never be forgotten.’

About 100 people attended the service, including two members of the ‘forgotten army’, John Quénault (90) and Ted Townend (93), who laid wreaths below a plaque of remembrance.
